Stress Management Tips and Techniques

None of us can remove all stress from our lives, but we can learn effective stress management methods. Here you will find stress management tips and techniques for coping with stress in your life.

manage stress

Meditation – Meditation helps to quiet the mind and lessen the noise we face in the world. The simplest way to meditate is to concentrate on inhaling and exhaling, calmly and slowly, which helps build awareness of our state of mind and inner and outer body.

Self Hypnosis - Self-hypnosis can assist us in relaxing our bodies while it allows stress hormones to subside and distracts our minds from unpleasant thoughts. Self hypnosis is more practical as a tool for stress reduction than hypnosis with a hypnotherapist, as we need only a quite, comfortable space in which to implement self hypnosis.

Exercise –Exercise in virtually any form, walking, swimming, yoga, aerobics, etc, can decrease the production of stress hormones and counteract our body's natural stress response.

Diet – Poor nutrition is a leading cause of stress. Eating out less and cooking our own food with a diet of healthy foods like vegetables, fruit, fish, chicken, nuts, and legumes can help our body function better.

Massage – Massage therapy is an excellent way to reduce stress. Stress generally causes tension in our muscles. A massage relieves muscular tension and signals the brain to tell all of our muscles to relax.

Sleep Patterns – If we don't get enough sleep, our bodies produce extra stress hormones, leaving us more vulnerable to anxiety and stress. A regular bedtime allows our internal clock to quiet down at the same time each night and helps us to sleep better.

Friends and Family – Intimacy and spending quality time with good friends and family, laughing and hugging, helps to reduce stress. Social support appears to keep stress responses such as increased heart rate, hypertension and stress hormones, from going out of control.

Self-awareness – Becoming aware of how various events affect us can help us make decisions that can reduce our stress levels. Keeping a journal is one effective way to develop a clear picture of stress-inducing behavioural patterns.

Relaxation – Reading a book, listening to music, or any other means we choose in order to feel physically and emotionally relaxed will lessen our stress.

Nature – A walk on the beach or in a local park or forest, while listening to the sounds of nature and breathing the fresh air is a great stress buster.

Vacations – A vacation can help us to refocus, re-examine our goals and our life, and allows us to temporarily escape from daily obligations and issues. Bon Voyage!
